STEAM - 'IF YOU CAN DREAM IT YOU CAN MAKE IT...'

At Lalor North Primary School, we offer a STEAM program that inspires curiosity, fosters innovation, and equips students with the essential skills they need in an ever-evolving world. STEAM - an integrated approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics, is not just a subject area, but a way of thinking, exploring and creating.
Our students engage in hands on, inquiry-based learning that encourages them to ask questions, explore possibilities, and develop real world solutions through collaborative projects.
From the Foundation years through to Year 6, students are immersed in rich learning experiences that promote:
- Creative problem-solving
- Critical and computational thinking
- Digital literacy and communication
- Teamwork and resilience
- Design thinking and innovation
Why STEAM Matters...
The global landscape is evolving rapidly. Automation, artificial intelligence and technological innovation are transforming industries and creating entirely new careers. At Lalor North, we ensure our students are not just passive consumers of technology, but confident creators and critical thinkers.
STEAM learning prepares students with the skills and mindsets to thrive in the 21st century and beyond:
- Adaptability in the face of change
- Confidence to lead and innovate
- Collaborative and independent learning
- Curiosity to explore and discover
We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to see themselves as a scientist, coder, engineer, designer, or innovator. Through our inclusive and forward-thinking STEAM program, we are igniting a passion for learning that extends beyond the classroom. At Lalor North Primary School, students are not just preparing for the future ….they are creating it.

What Learning Looks Like in our STEAM Program
Our students work on exciting projects that integrate multiple disciplines and allow them to see the purpose of what they are learning. Some of the engaging tools and activities include:
- Robotics and Programming: Students explore coding and automation using Bee-Bots, Lego WeDo, and EV3 Mindstorms. They learn to design, build and program robots to complete tasks, solve problems, and navigate challenges.
- Lego Engineering: Through Lego-based challenges, students develop spatial reasoning, understand mechanical systems, and apply principles of physics and design to bring their ideas to life.
- Digital Technologies: Students learn a variety of programming languages and digital tools to design apps, create animations, and build interactive systems, developing their understanding of logic, sequence and systems.
- Real-World Projects: Learners tackle authentic problems through design-thinking projects that encourage innovative solutions and community-focused outcomes. These projects often integrate multiple learning areas including science experiments, data collection, digital presentations, and mathematical modelling.

Showcasing Success: National Recognition
Our commitment to STEAM learning is reflected in our students’ achievements. In 2024, a Lalor North Primary School student proudly placed first nationally in the Young ICT Explorers Competition, a prestigious showcase of student-led digital innovations. This incredible achievement is a testament to the creativity, perseverance and digital fluency we nurture across our school.
